To which, G-d said,
"Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the L-RD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the L-RD holds them in derision.
Then He will speak to them in His wrath, and terrify them in His fury, saying, “As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The L-RD said to Me, “You are My Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your heritage, and the ends of the earth Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the L-RD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in Him."
Luke,
ReplyDeleteI love this post, so much to talk about!! Ps.2 - one of my favorites (well actually i have a whole Bible of favorites lolol). Great Midrash, I'd had not read this one yet!
(Rashi on Ps.2) - "Peoples/teachers the essence of this chapter is of King Moshiach according to context."
Check this one out:
(Zohar, Ps.2:7) - "There is a Man (if you can call Him a man), who is a Malakh/Angel who's name is Metatr-n, He will be the guard of Israel, He is the portrait of G-d. It cannot be said of Him that He was created, formed, or made. (the quote gives this reference: Jer.23:5,6)
Awesome, Rey! Thanks for that. And of course, Yirmeyahu 23 is a beautiful reference.
ReplyDelete"Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.'
(Zohar, Ps.2:12) - "You are the Good Shepherd (Faithful Shepherd), of You it says "Kiss the Son". You are the Rabbi over all Israel, You are the Master of the heavenly beings, You are the Son of G-d and of the Shechinah."
ReplyDelete(Zohar, Ps.2. Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai)- "Faithful Shepherd, You are the Son of G-d and of the Shechinah, You are greater than the malachim/angels. "Kiss the Son", get up everybody and kiss Him and receive Him as King and Lord".
G-d says in Jeremiah that there will be no other kings on Mt.Zion except "HaShem". Moshiach will sit on Mt. Zion as King - Ps.2. The Sages interpreted Ps.21:1-4 to refer to King Moshiach.
(Midrash Rabbah Shemot, Ps.21:4) - "A King who is a fleshy king (flesh and blood)does not wear his own crown, but it is G-d Almighty who gives the Crown to King Moshiach."
See the distinction between a king of flesh and blood and a Heavenly King.
More exquisite Sage gems! I'm telling you, it's like Hanukkah in July - and I'm feeling a second post coming on.
ReplyDeleteRabbi Nehunia ben Hakkanah said, "Whoever takes upon himself the yoke of Torah, they remove from him the yoke of government and the yoke of worldly concerns, and whoever breaks off from himself the yoke of Torah, they place upon himself the yoke of government and the yoke of worldly concern." ~ Avot 3:5
ReplyDeleteSo we understand these "bonds" and "cords" to be interpreted as the yoke of the Torah - G-d's Holy Instructions!
The Heathen, the people, the kings of the earth, and rulers who, with one voice, say this and what follows, and cast away their cords from us; with relation to the L-RD and His Anointed, whose laws, ordinances, and truths, they call "bonds" and "cords"; so Arama interprets them of the Torah, and the Commandments; or a "yoke", as the Vulgate Latin, Septuagint, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions render the last word; and the phrases in general express their irreverence of G-d and the Moshiach, their rejection of Moshiach and His Kingdom; their non-subjection to Him, and their refusal to have Him to rule over them; and their dis-esteem and contempt of His Torah, and of the ordinances of it, and of the laws and rules of His government in His congregations: and also they show the wrong notion that carnal men have of these things, that whereas Moshiach's yoke is easy and His burden light.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” ~ Matityahu 11:28-30
